Sweet, spicy, and ridiculously easy – that’s pretty much everything you need to know about this Homemade Hot Honey! Made with just two ingredients of honey and red pepper flakes, this simple recipe takes only a few minutes to make and adds the perfect sweet and spicy kick to just about anything.

I love keeping a mason jar of hot honey in the pantry because it can turn an ordinary meal into something amazing with almost no effort. Drizzle it over pizza, crispy chicken, roasted vegetables, biscuits, cheese, or even your morning eggs. Once you have it, you’ll probably start finding excuses to put it on everything like we do! And since it’s naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, it’s an easy condiment to keep on hand for just about everyone.

Hot Honey On Everything! Oh, wait…

Well, it probably can’t go on absolutely everything, but it’s insanely good, I promise. Two of my favorite combinations are hot honey drizzled over pizza or over butternut squash and Brussel sprouts. The sweet honey and spicy red pepper flakes pair perfectly with savory toppings and crispy crust. However, we do love drizzling it over:

  • Pizza! We are totally obsessed with drizzling hot honey on our pizza, especially my husband! Try it drizzled on my fluffy Gluten-Free Pizza Crust!
  • Fried or roasted chicken
  • Breads!! Hot honey is absolutely divine drizzled on my Gluten-Free Sourdough or these Gluten-Free Sourdough Drop Biscuits!
  • Roasted vegetables, especially sweet potatoes
  • Butternut squash and brussels sprouts taste like heaven with hot honey, try this Apple Sausage Sheet Pan
  • Eggs
  • Sandwiches or burgers
  • Salads
  • Cheese and crackers or a little bowl on a charcuterie board or on top of baked brie
  • Fresh fruit and desserts like ice cream, brownies, or cheesecake
  • Drinks and cocktails as a sweetener

Easy Ways to Customize It

Once you’ve made the basic two-ingredient version, you can just have fun experimenting. However, make sure you refrigerate the hot honey if you add in fresh ingredients. We’ve tried these different combinations and they don’t disappoint:

  • Garlic for a savory twist
  • Fresh herbs
  • Smoked red pepper flakes for a smoky flavor
  • A pinch of cayenne for extra heat
  • A little apple cider vinegar for tanginess and less sweetness

How to Store Homemade Hot Honey

Store your hot honey in a clean, airtight mason jar or container in a cool, dry place like your pantry. If you add fresh ingredients such as garlic or fresh herbs, refrigeration is recommended and the storage time will be shorter. Always use clean utensils when serving to help keep the honey fresh.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup honey
  • 3 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, add the honey and red pepper flakes. Heat over medium heat until the honey lightly simmers. Stir the mixture a few times and remove from the heat.
  • Let the honey rest for about 15 minutes to let the flavors infuse.
  • Taste the honey to test the heat level. If you would like a spicier honey, you’re welcome to add more red pepper flakes or let the mixture continue to infuse for longer.
  • Once the honey has reached your desired heat level, strain the honey through a mesh strainer into a clean mason jar. Use immediately or seal and store in a cool, dry place.
