Classic Lime Margarita

There’s nothing quite like a fresh Classic Lime Margarita, after all it’s one of the most popular cocktails in the world and definitely my favorite. This margarita is bright, citrusy, perfectly balanced, and always feels like a celebration all created by my husband. It’s perfect for a relaxing evening at home, any taco night of the week, or mixing up a batch for friends. This classic cocktail keeps it all simple, refreshing, and full of flavor.

I love that I’m completely in control of the balance of flavors and can skip the sugary mixes from the store. I like mine tart, refreshing, and not-too-sweet, so my hubby perfected the perfect margarita for me. You can taste and adjust this recipe easily to find your ideal balance too, but I know you’ll love this crisp, clean drink.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this margarita recipe:

  • Tequila – Use any good-quality silver, blanco , or reposado tequila in this recipe.
  • Orange liqueur – We like Triple sec or Cointreau.
  • Lime juice – For the best results, squeeze fresh lime juice right before you make your cocktails. But if I’m being totally honest…we definitely short cut and use the bottled lime juice from the store too. I like my margarita to be pretty tart, so we almost use an equal amount of lime juice and tequila.
  • Lemon juice – Adds a special twist that makes this margarita the ultimate cocktail recipe!
  • Something sweet – I sweeten mine with agave syrup or homemade simple syrup.
  • Salt – For the rim of your glass, I recommend coarse sea salt and if you want to be fancier, you can mix it with a little lime zest.
  • And ice! Because this cocktail is best on the rocks!

Ingredients

  • 3 oz water
  • 2 oz blanco or silver tequila
  • 1/2 oz orange liqueur (We like to use Triple Sec)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice (bottles works too)
  • 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice (bottled works too)
  • 1/2 oz agave
  • ice
  • Lime wedge and coarse salt, for the glass rim (optional)

Instructions

  • Salt the rim of the glass (optional): Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a glass. Fill a small plate with coarse salt. Dip the glass into the salt to coat the rim. Fill with ice.
  • Place the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, lemon juice, water, and agave in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into the glass. Taste and stir in more agave nectar, if desired. Garnish with lime slices and serve.

Notes

This recipe makes a single-serving margarita. For a pitcher of margaritas, multiply the recipe by 8 to make enough to serve a crowd. I recommend stirring it in a pitcher with ice instead of shaking it.
