Grandma’s Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Waffles

Some recipes aren’t just about food, they’re about memories too. These waffles are exactly that. My mom created these years ago and they’re loved by absolutely everyone. They’re perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and so delicious that no one ever guesses they’re both gluten-free and dairy-free. Plus, they come together in minutes and are perfect for meal prep for those busy mornings.

The Story Behind Grandma’s Waffles

This recipe was created by my mom when our family needed a breakfast that everyone could enjoy while still being gluten-free and dairy-free when food allergies hit our family hard. After a little experimenting, she landed on the perfect combination of ingredients that created waffles just as fluffy and delicious as the traditional kind.

Grandma makes them every time we visit, and somehow the stack of waffles disappears almost as quickly as she makes them. Even though we make these regularly in our house, they just taste way better at Grandma’s house. How does that happen? I think it’s all the love my mom puts in the batter when she makes them for us.

They’re also perfect for busy mornings. You can make a big batch, freeze the extras, and pop them in the toaster later for a quick breakfast, like busy school mornings, that still tastes homemade.

Our Favorite Ways to Serve Them

These waffles are amazing on their own, but they’re even better with some of our favorite toppings:

  • Fresh berries or sliced bananas
  • Pure maple syrup
  • Dairy-free whipped cream & some sprinkles for fun (typically done by my oldest daughter, Riley, who loves adding sprinkles to anything)
  • Peanut butter
  • A sprinkle of powdered sugar
  • Fried chicken

We also LOVE to add chocolate chips or blueberries to the batter for an extra fun twist.

Want some extra Protein? Just throw a scoop of your favorite protein powder in and a little extra applesauce if the batter is too dry.

Once you make these waffles for your family, they’ll become a tradition in your home too.

Our Favorite Waffle Makers

Our two favorite waffle makers to use are the Cuisinart 4 Slice Belgian Waffle Maker and the Dash Mini Waffle Maker for fun tiny waffles.

Pro Tip: For a super quick fried egg, just crack an egg into the greased mini waffle maker. Trust me…you’ll have cooked eggs in a minute without any cleanup!
